Squarespace Fail

It’s nice that the Squarespace blog talks about SXSW and how much they’re growing and their plans for the future and all that. But when I have four sites over on the Squarespace platform and when going to any of them delivers the kind of thing you see above instead of a home page, it would also be nice if they posted an explanation for what’s going on.

Tiger's Nike Ad

I’m still not sure what to think about the now-infamous Nike ad that uses a voiceover of Tiger Woods’ father. It’s profoundly creepy, but it also seems like the kind of ultra-high-profile public display of shame that he needs to work through to get back to some semblance of normalcy, whatever that means in his profoundly abnormal life.

Meanwhile, the Web is lousy with mashups that use the Nike video with alternate soundtracks. It’s become another meme, like the Hitler videos. On Masters weekend, or any weekend, this has to be one of the most appropriate.

PaidContent.org reports that The Huffington Post is launching Twitter editions, the primary purpose of which is “to harness the social networking aspects of the site to create a real-time news service for each of HuffPo’s 19 sections.”

I made the move from magazine publishing to Web communications back in 1996, and it was not a minute too soon: Today, AdAge reports (and HuffPo comments) that last year, and for the first time ever, more advertising dollars were spent online than were spent on magazines.

Why do Costco customers spend so much? Over on The Frontal Cortex, Wired contributing editor Jonah Lehrer deconstructs:

“… this is where all those details of the Costco shopping experience make us more likely to spend money. The bare bones warehouse aesthetic, the discounted house brand, the constant reassurance that we’re paying ‘wholesale’ prices — it’s all an effective means of convincing us to not worry so much about the price tag. As a result, we’re able to focus entirely on our anticipated pleasures, which is why I walk out of the store with all this stuff I don’t need.”
